ASIACOAT2003 SPECIAL
Focus on China from the VIEWPOINT OF world Coatings growth
--Interviewing Mr. Jiro Fujiwara, international division director of Japan Paint Manufacturers Association (JPMA)

More than 20 Japanese companies attended the 8th China International Exhibition for Coatings, Printing Inks and Surface Finishing (ASIACOAT). JPMA organized coatings companies in Japan as a delegation to attend this exhibition to show the whole image of Japanese coatings industry. It is noticeable and is the most beautiful scenery in the exhibition.

Why Japanese coatings industry pays much attention to Chinese market? In this regard, the journalist interviewed Mr. Jiro Fujiwara, international minister of Japan Paint Manufacturers Association (JPMA).

Mr. Jiro Fujiwara told the journalist a series of data, and answered this question. In 1990, the annual output of coatings in Japan was 2,200,000 tons, and in the next 12 years the output decreased gradually each year. In 2002, the output decreased to 1780,000 tons. Does the output of Japanese coatings decrease really? Actually it is not. There are 9 Japanese coatings companies in China before 1997, and by 2002 the number of companies increases up to 26. The output in China increases from 80,000 tons in 1997 to 255,000 tons in 2002. China is the biggest market for Japan to operate its overseas market.

China International Exhibition for Coatings, Printing Inks and Surface Finishing (ASIACOAT) gives a great surprise to Japanese exhibitors. Mr. Jiro Fujiwara, who organized a delegation to China for the first time, was very surprised by so many specialty visitors. He said that the global coatings increase rate was in Asia and exactly in China. This was the main reason why JPMA organized the delegation to attend the exhibition.

During the exhibition, the delegation of JPMA communicated with China National Coatings Industry Association and visited the authoritative organization of coatings industry in China?CNCCC Changzhou Paint & Coatings Chemical Industry Research Institute.
Mr. Jiro Fujiwara said that they regarded China and Japan as a whole market and hoped that the organizations of coatings industry in these two countries would cooperate in the aspect of standardization, and create more convenient environment for products mutual trading.
