The National Paint & Coatings Industrial Center has affiliated with Dainippon Ink and Chemical Inc. for many years. In 1995, the representatives of the National Paint & Coatings Industrial Center visited DIC headquarter in Hongkong. Lately, they visited the Chinese branch company Shanghai DIC International Trading Co., Ltd. and interviewed its sales representatives Jin Liang and Ye Qing:
Q: Please introduce DIC’s development history and main operation fields.

A: DIC was founded in 1908, and has purchased Sun Chemicals, Coats and Reichhold during development. The main operations have related to printing inks, organic pigments and synthetic resin, and it has become the largest organic pigments producer in the world.

Q: What about your operation in China?

A: DIC has entered Chinese market earlier and has set up 22 joint venture companies, single-venture enterprises and sales offices, which relate to ink, pigment, dye, resin and so on.

Shanghai DIC International Trading Co., Ltd. was founded in 1997, and mainly engages in trading fine chemicals, printing materials, synthetic resin and biography chemicals. At present, we’re selling pigments. Shanghai DIC is the biggest printing ink production spot in the mainland of DIC, and it is intended to introduce high efficiency product equipment and advanced process in summer of 2003.

In the recent years, the application of high performance pigments in coatings and plastics becomes wider. For example, the pigments in automotive refinishes and coil coatings should be high-temperature resistant and color changeless, but the common pigments could not achieve. Therefore, many high-tech pigments should rely on importing especially organic pigments. DIC has worldwide lead level in ink pigments and also produces Red 112, Purple 23 and Red 19 Coating pigments in China. The green and blue high performance pigments are almost imported from Japan, which are produced in Limu Town, Deer Island and has quality and price advantages compared to other imported products. For common pigments, the DIC single-venture enterprise in Jiangsu Nantong will put into production in Feb., 2003, mainly producing yellow and red common pigments. The technology and equipment are from Japan, and the raw materials would be purchased locally in order to reduce the cost.

The coating resin produced by DIC is adopted by many well-known international coatings producers. For instance, the high quality resin for automotive pigments is used in the products of Guanxi and Nippon. Recently we’ll produce A-858 resin for NV75% high solid crylic acid polyalcohol face coat. Besides, we’re also preparing to enter Chinese fluor coatings market. The super high weather resistant and normal temperature cure aqueous fluor resin is used widely in sea-bridge, airport and external protective coat in super high buildings in the abroad. In Korea, we have the 70% share in this field. In China at present, some factory like Ningbo Dongshen has applied it in relevant large important project, and is judged well.

A: We have had a Chinese web before, but it was not so good. Now we’re making new Chinese web, including good interface and rich contents. When it finished, our customers can look for information about DIC conveniently.
