Developing Actuality and Trend of Anticorrosion Coatings (Commercial Anticorrosion Coatings)

    Anticorrosion coatings include commercial anticorrosion coatings, marine coatings and container coatings. It is evaluated that our country lost about 50 billion yuan in 2002 due to corrosion. Therefore, anticorrosion coatings develop so fast that only lower than architectural coatings. In 2002, the total output of anticorrosion coatings was 530 000 t, of which commercial anticorrosion coatings were 250 000 t, marine coatings were 160 000 t and container coatings were 120 000 t.

Actuality: Various new special anticorrosion coatings have been developed and promoted.
    Commercial anticorrosion coatings are currently applied in petrochemical industry, including oil and gas pipe anticorrosion, equipments of chemical factory, treatment of wastewater, etc. In recent years, we have developed many new excellent anticorrosion coatings, for example, high solid coatings, long life anticorrosion coatings, flake anticorrosion coatings, powder coatings, solventless coatings, waterborne anticorrosion coatings, fluorocoatings, etc. In addition, we also developed several special anticorrosion coatings, such as high temperature anticorrosion coatings, antistatic coatings, high elastic coatings and nontoxic coatings.

    Chlorinated high polymer anticorrosion coating has good barrier effects to water and oxygen, so it is still a main type of commercial anticorrosion coatings. Common chlorinated high polymers include chlorinated paraffin, chlorinated rubber and chlorinated polyalkene (polyethylene, polypropylene, chloroethylene, etc.). We recently also developed chlorinated ether resin (chloroethylene/ethylent-isobutyl ether copolymer), which could prevent film brittleness and strength the durability.

    Epoxy coatings utilize zinc to prepare anticorrosion pigment and usually apply as temporary primer and maintenance paint for plants and ships. Inorganic zinc-rich primer could be classified into two kinds: solvent and waterborne. The former one uses sodium silicate as binder, while the latter one uses ethyl silicon ester. We have successfully developed a kind of heat resistant and heavy anticorrosion coatings—HWE inorganic zinc silicate primer.

    Polyurethane coatings could be classified into one pack moisture cured polyurethane coatings and two pack polyurethane coatings, according to package.

    High solid coating is the developing trend of commercial anticorrosion coatings. At present, foreign corporations have developed super high solid (95%) anticorrosion coatings.

Trend: No empoison, no effects of pollution to society, energy saving, economic and high efficient
    This 4E principle is the general developing trend of anticorrosion coatings.

    No effects of pollution to society means that the composites, synthesize of materials, process of production, pretreatment of substrate and application are all non-toxic.

    Non-toxic or low toxic waterborne, high solid, solventless and powder anticorrosion coatings are promoted widely. High solid coating is the fastest developing type in recent years, and it is developing towards solventless coatings. Solventless coating is also named active slvent coating, which has low pollution to environment. Since this system has high viscosity, it needs special application facility. Spatter Painting Polyurea Elastomer Art (SPUA) is kind of new environmental protective spatter painting technology researched by foreign corporations. We have also developed relevant technology and it is has promising prospect. Epoxy powder coating is the head anticorrosion coating in pipe anticorrosion, while the storage stability and application property of our epoxy powder coatings still have distance to foreign coatings. Low bake curing resins become more popular, and durability of super weather resistant resins becomes better so that polyester/propylene powder coating comes out.

    Anticorrosion coatings also develop towards high performance and multi-function. High performance coatings include silicone modified polyurethane coatings, organic fluoro modified polyurethane coatings and fluororesin coatings. Multifunction coatings include solar barrier anticorrosion coatings, damping anticorrosion coatings, weather resistant anticorrosion polyurethane coatings, peelable anticorrosion coatings and flame-retardant, conductive and heat resistant anticorrosion coatings.

    We should strengthen the quality management of coatings and painting. A large challenge we face is the proceeding research and production, training of eligible employees and. management of coatings.
