Waterborne dip coating utilizes water as main diluent, so it is difficult to be flammable and has little odor, low toxic, easy application and wide utilization. However, along with the development of technology, waterborne dip coatings become much worse than EC, which has both better appearance and performance.

    At present, the application of waterborne dip coatings still focus on underpan, components, compressor of refrigerator and other fields requiring inferior film quality. The main product types are water-soluble epoxy polyester system (high VOC content), water-soluble acrylic system (false body and low solids), water dispersable epoxy acrylic system, etc. These various products don’t have uniform standards and have irregular performances. Most products don’t have reliable test methods and quality warranty. Most manufacturers dedicate in price competition but not quality, which certainly result stagnation of the total industry.

    Experts forecasted that in 2005, our demand for coatings will reach 2.25 million tons, and the commercial coatings will take up 0.9 million tons, while waterborne coatings only take up 1%~2%. The manufacturers of waterborne dip coatings should adjust their products structure, build well-known brands and develop advanced products.

    Generally, waterborne dip coating market has gone across its illustrious period and entered stable developing period. There are various manufacturers and products, with increasing cost and decreasing price. Its development will be limited by increasing requirement from customers, difficulty of technology improvement and development of EC.
