Limits of harmful substances in solvent wood lacquer
(GB18581-2001)

(2002-1-1)

1. Range

This criterion regulates the technical request, testing methods, supervising rules, packing sign and safe coating of limits of harmful substances in pyroxyline lacquer, polyurethane lacquer and alkyd lacquer.

This criterion is applied to the solvent wood lacquer(1) used in internal decoration, while other resin coatings and solvent coatings used in internal decoration could use it dependently.

This criterion cannot be applied to aqueous wood lacquer.

2. Citing relevant documents canonically

The items of following documents have been the items of this criterion after citing. As for the dated citing documents, all the following modification (not including corrigenda) or revision cannot apply to this criterion. However, we encourage those who have come to an agreement according to this criterion to study whether they could use the latest editions of these documents. All the latest editions of the non-dated citing documents can apply to this criterion.

a.        To mensurate after mixing according to the stated ratio of components and dilution. If the usage quantity of thinner has a range, it should be mensurated according to the recommended maximum dilution.

b.       If the product prescribes the dilution ratio or the product is composed by two-component or polycomponent, it should measure the contents in thinner and each component separately and then account the total contents after mixing according to the stated ratio of components. If the usage quantity of thinner has a range, it should be accounted according to the recommended maximum dilution.

c.        If the dilution ratio or two-component or poltcomponent is prescribed such as polrurethane lacquer, it should measure the contents in curative agent (containing toluene diisocyanate prepolymer) firstly, and then account the total contents after mixing according to the stated ratio of components. If the usage quantity of thinner has a range, it should be accounted according to the recommended minimum dilution.

4. Testing methods

4.1 Sampling

Sampling according to GB 3186-1982 (1989). The samples could be separated to two shares. One is conserved hermetically, and the other is for supervision as sample.

4.2 Mensuration of volatile organic compounds (VOC)

4.2.1 After stirring the sample equably, mensurate the mass point (V) of volatile materials in coatings according to GB/T 6751-7986. Testing condition: (105±2)°C, 3h.

4.2.2 After stirring the sample equably, mensurate the coatings density (p) according to GB/T 6750-1986 . The testing temperature is (23±2) °C.

4.2.3 Account the VOC contents according to the formula: VOC=V×p×103
VOC——the contents of volatile organic compounds, g/l;
V——the mass point of volatiles;
p——the coatings density in (23±2) °C,g/ml.

4.3 Mensuration of benzene, according to appendix A.

4.4 Mensuration of toluene and xylene, according to appendix A.

4.5 Mensuration of free toluene diisocyanate (TDI), according to GB/T 18446-2001. The fixed liquid could choose methyl polysiloxane. For the sample that easily decompounds, it can choose a proper temperature that can evaporate the sample completely without decompounding it.

4.6 Mensuration of heavy metals (soluble lead, soluble cadmium, soluble chrome, soluble mercury), according to appendix B.

5. Supervising Rules

5.1 All technical contents listed by this criterion are model-supervising items.

5.1.1 Under natural working condition, model-supervision should be held annually.

5.1.2 The model-supervision should be held if one of following instances happens:

——when the new products being typed originally;
——when the products being produced adventively;
——when the formula, process and raw material having large change;
——when resuming production after three-month stopping.

5.2 Judgment of testing result

5.2.1 Judgment of testing result is made according to the mending value comparative measurement in GB/T 1250-1989.

5.2.2 As long as testing results of all items reach this criterion, this product accords with this criterion. If one testing result cannot reach this criterion, it should retest the reserved sample. If the retesting result cannot reach this criterion, either, this product is ineligible.

6. Packing Sign

6.1 The packing sign should accord with the rules in GB/T 9750-1998, and the eligible products can sign clearly in the packages.

6.2 For those two-component or polycomponent coatings, their component ratio should be signed in packages. For those coatings that need dilute, the dilution ratio should be signed in packages.

7. Safe Coating

7.1 Keep good aeration and far away from fire when coating.

7.2 Adopt brush coating to your best.

7.3 The workers should wear necessary safety outfit.

7.4 Keep good aeration after coating.

7.5 The coated room should be placed for a period of time.
